Mitsubishi Colt 1.5 D - Automatic Gearbox Fault reving up for it to engage - Plazydays

Hi, my father has a 2008 Mitsubishi Colt 1.5 Diesel with an Automatic Gearbox. If he leaves the car for just a few days, when he gets in it, he selects the gear he wants, Auto, reverse etc, but he has to rev the car up to about 2000 revs before the actual gearbox bits which at this point the car shoots forward or reverse.

Obviosuly, this could cause a problem if he was parked between to cars. Once the car has run for a bit, the gearbox is fine and no issues. I am quite concerned as he is 70 years old so his reaction is not as got as it used to be.

The car is booked into the garage next week from where he got it, but I woud like to know if anyone had any suggestions as to what it might be so that he does not get ripped off at the garage.

Thanks

Possibly the gearbox fluid is low. Not sure if these cars have a dipstick where you can check it yourself. Have a look in the handbook.

Sounds very much like low oil, or the oil has got old and thick ! It may pay to change auto box oil and filter screen.

Are these not the same gearbox used in the Smart forfour and not realy a full autobox.

Correct Collos, its an automated manual. Sounds like the mechatronic unit has failed i.e. the gizmo and electrickery which does the job of your left foot in a manual.

Hi there,
I have exactly the same car and having the same problem. I took it 3 mechanics gearbox specialists. One said the gearbox is fine, one said might need changing gearbox oil filter but then couldn't find a a filter, and one who told the best thing is to get rid of my car.
I took it to the dealer, they wanted to rip off the gearbox to examine it and wanted to charge 500 + vat just for examination.

I would be very grateful if you can help me and tell what happened with you and how you fixed the problem.

Many many many thanks

I hope the OP is a lurker, however..

The third mechanic is probably the right one.

Automated manuals when they go wrong will empty your wallet faster than a politician on expenses can fill theirs.

Thinking laterally.....

It might not be a gearbox issue at all - the author seems to have assumed this. Might (just might) be brake pads stuck to the discs eg with damp weather (mentions after stood for a few days). My car (a 4 yr old i30) does this sometimes, and they release with an alarming "twang". Interestingly - my hobby car (a 30+ yr old Datsun) never does this - maybe an indication of brake disc quality?

Lets hope for the best and for a simple fix rather than a painful auto gearbox fault.

Rear disc brakes with handbrake operating on the same pads? never liked them, but miles better than an electric version.

Your 30 year old Datsun has a much simpler, and proven to last much longer, system.

My Colt automatic has just started doing this.

Nothing to do with the brakes as if parked facing up a hill, I'll roll back whilst revving in gear once the hand brake is released.

It lurches forward as if dumping the clutch in a manual.

Only does it 2 or 3 times, then it's fine.

Did anyone ever get to the bottom of it?

Hello! I realize it's nearly 6 years since this message was posted, but its wortb a try!

Same thing started happening to my car too.

Has anyone been able to get to the bottom it? Gearbox oil changed.

My Colt has the same issue,, intermittent and fine once it has changed gear 3/4 times. A bit hairy when it happens as the car can lurch forward when clutch eventually bites. Did anyone find out if it is the clutch etc?
