Has anyone got one of these ?
Is it underpowered, or was it just because I was testing a new one and the engine was tight ?
It was ok up to about 60mph and then things just became a struggle, the engine was harsh and there was an unpleasant amount of vibration.
I'm only interested int he diesel because I can get a really good deal on an ex-demo.
Also, has anyone driven the 3.0 V6 Petrol Is that ok ?
As far as I can see the Shogun Sport only comes with those tow engines, although I was dealing wiht a total dipstick at the garage who may well have been on his first day.
The Shogun (not sport) is a different, and somewhat more old-fashioned body shell, I think. Which is the best engine in that one ?
I am not concerned in the slightest with fuel consumption.

p.s. and yes, I have read the CbyC Breakdown.

Yes it is underpowered, and yes, it is harsh. You're looking at good ol' fashioned diesel technology with a balancer shaft thrown in.
V6 is ok though, even if still a bit old tech.
|
Does the V6 have enough power ? And what impact might the fact that it is "old tech" have ?
The not-sport Shogun seems to have a better choice of engines. Would I be better to go for the Shogun 3.5 V6 petrol ? It has a lot more power, but its a bigger car. I haven't driven one yet.
Also, the Sport is very nicely kitted out inside and comfortable, although the seat is perhaps alittle close to the floor. I know I'll find out when I test one, but does anyone have anything to say about the inside of the Shogun not-Sport ?

My brother has an L200 twin cab 4x4. Same engine. it's underpowered for a car and for the American idea of a truck, but bruv has done 60k in his; even drove it down to his boat in Corfu (via Italy and a ferry). Got an amazing 50k + out of the tyres. Also worth checking out the Nissan Navarra and the Toyota whatever it is as they both recently had a small power boost.

Also worth looking at the Nissan Patrol as they have just come in with a new cut-price version for £24k. There's an announcement about this in the news.

Mark, try www.cab4.com . They seem to import more interesting SUVs and twin cabs with bigger, more powerful engines not normally available in the UK. The benefit of a twin cab pick up with a 1 tonne payload is you can get the VAT back (if you're VAT registered) and (if you can justify it for business use) some (but not all) tax offices will allow you to have one on the company paying BIK on just £500.

An ex-girlfriend had a Shogun Sport. It is an absolutley horrible car, big on the outside, small on the inside, and though it's probably put together well enough, it doesn't feel that way.
As for underpowered - if you don't believe me, there's a picture of one under 'underpowered' in the dictionary. Probably.
Although it's the only 4x4 I've ever driven (and then only once) I hated the handling and it certainly didn't feel safe on the motorway with her driving. As it was her first (borrowed) car she didn't notice the difference, but I'm sure you could do better Mark. Like, with a Freelander, say :-)
Having said that they bought it to tow horseboxes, which it is very good at. On the other hand, it's not quite as good as a 38 ton artic.

Ok. That's the Shogun Sport out then.
What do we think of the Landcruiser Colorado ? Again I have read HJ's comments in the CBCB which are very helpful.
THe newer 3.0 diesel seems to be the one to go for.
I've always got on well with Toyota 4WDs, but I've not had a go in a Colorado, so if anybody has any personal experience I would be interested.
As for the Freelander, I've got one fitted to my Dodge Ram but it was marketed under the name "Starter Motor".
HJ, I've looked at the site you recommend, which is interesting although they only seem to have two basic vehicles at the moment. Thansk for your other comments as well.

The Shogun Sport/Challenger is the Mitso version of the Toyota Four Runner/Hi-Lux Surf. The Mitso V6 petrol engine is always a nicer drive than the diesel. We have got a 2001 Mitsubishi Pajero with the 3.5 GDi V6 petrol engine which does drive very well, smooth and powerful, with between 17 and 26 MPG.
We have sold plenty of Toyota Prados, the Japanese Colorado with the 3.0 Diesel, and these are a very capable and tough vehicle.
For me,for what its worth,i would choose the Toyota Prado/Colorado 1st and then the Mitsubishi, always with a petrol engine, but if you must then the diesel will have to do!
|
In the CBCB HJ says that the Prado should be much cheaper than the Colorado. Are there differences between them ?
If not, are there any implications in owning one rather than the other ?

I now have a 1999 facelift 2.8 TD Shogun LWB, its a lovely car, drives well and is very reliable, but yes it is slightly underpowered. Prior to this I had a 3ltr V6 Petrol, same car.... very nice but much quicker.
The Sports or Challengers done by Mitsy, I think are horrible, each to there own.
