Best selling cars in the UK 2022

Nissan Qashqai 2021

The Nissan Qashqai was the UK's best-selling car in July 2022, according to new registration figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

A total of 112,162 new cars were registered by dealers in July 2022 - a 9 per cent year-on-year drop. New car sales have now fallen for five months in a row due to ongoing global supply chain issues, mainly the lack of semiconductors, which have been made worse by Covid-19 lockdowns in key manufacturing and logistics centres in China and disruption from the war in Ukraine.

Nissan Qashqai

Comfortable, easy to drive and practical, the British-built Nissan Qashqai is a brilliant family SUV. Both the 1.3 petrol and 1.5 petrol hybrid are good to drive and efficient, which means the Qashqai will add some sparkle to your daily commute without costing you a fortune at the fuel pumps. The interior is also more spacious and better equipped than the old Qashqai, with 504 litres of boot space and LED headlights fitted as standard.

MINI Hatch

A premium hatch that combines retro good looks with laugh-out-loud driving fun, the latest MINI is the small car with mass appeal. The three-door hatch is one of the most popular models in the MINI range with the 1.5 Cooper being our pick of the crop, with impressive spec and road performance.

Hyundai Tucson

The new look Hyundai Tucson, which you'll either love or loathe, is a step change for the brand. It lifts it from being a competent but fairly bland family SUV to a more desirable model, while still being hugely practical with one of the biggest boot spaces in the class at 620 litres. Diesel is no longer an option but you can choose from petrol and hybrid power, including mild-hybrid, conventional hybrid and plug-in hybrid.

Volkswagen T-Roc

We think the Volkswagen T-Roc, which had a mid-life facelift earlier this year, is one of the best small SUVs you can buy. Volkswagen has simplified the range so there are now only three core trim levels: Life, Style and R-Line. All three are well-equipped and there are a number of engines to choose from including diesel power. You can even choose a four-wheel-drive T-Roc.

Volkswagen Golf

The eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf appears a bit more showy than its predecessor, with its distinctive 'monobrow' front-end look, which can be shown off even more with a full-width LED light bar, and interior upgrades with most of the traditional buttons replaced by touch sensitive panels and a cool-looking touchscreen. But elsewhere the Golf's tried and tested traits remain intact. It feels solid and built to last, its pretty roomy and practical, its comfortable and refined and yet good to drive, and it's well-equipped as standard even from base level.

Vauxhall Corsa

The Corsa was the most popular car in 2021 thanks to its cheap running costs, good level of equipment and excellent road manners. It's been in the top five monthly best-sellers every month so far in 2022 and remains on course to repeat its success of 2021.

Audi A1

The Audi A1 is only available as a five-door Sportback since Audi ditched the three-door model in favour of offering a more versatile and practical car for its owners (and to help compete with the likes of the Volkswagen Polo and Ford Fiesta). Trim options are now more varied and there's a range of turbo petrol engines but we still find the models with the Sport suspension too harsh on most roads.

Kia Sportage

The Kia Sportage is a great value crossover that is well-equipped, practical and spacious and is backed by Kia's seven-year warranty. The 2022 Sportage is available with plug-in hybrid and mild-hybrid power and looks distinctly different to the outgoing model.

Toyota Aygo X

We like the striking design of the Aygo X - it's a bit like the old Aygo on steroids but it works. It's the first Aygo that's an entirely solo effort for the Japanese brand after Peugeot and Citroen decided not to follow up the closely related 108 and C1 with direct replacements. It gets chunky, rugged looks, bigger wheels and a seating position raised by 5cm over the old car.

Toyota Yaris

The Toyota Yaris majors on comfort and fuel economy. It's only available as a petrol-electric hybrid but it's capable of returning fuel economy of 60mpg with ease. The Yaris also comes loaded with autonomous driving aids.
