Model History

July 2018

A-Class Saloon revealed

Standard features include the MBUX – Mercedes-Benz User Experience infotainment system with touchscreen, and driving assistance systems of the latest generation such as Active Brake Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist. In addition, the A-Class Saloon can be customised with the design and equipment lines Style, Progressive and AMG Line, the Night Package as well as further optional equipment.

The boot holds 420 litres and was designed for practical usability. The boot opening is very large with a width of 950 mm and a diagonal of 462 mm between lock and lower edge of the rear window. This allows comfortable loading and unloading of larger luggage items.

The following engines are available from launch:

  • A 200 (163PS and 250Nm) with 7G-DCT dual-clutch transmission
  • A 180 d (116PS and 260 Nm) with 7G-DCT dual-clutch transmission

The A-Class Saloon will be available as an Edition 1 in the year of the market launch. This special model features a host of copper-coloured highlights in the exterior and interior.

  • Length/width/height: 4549/1796/1446 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2729 mm
  • Boot capacity: 420 litres
  • Headroom front/rear: 1024/944 mm
  • Elbow room front/rear1457/1446 mm
  • Shoulder room front/rear1400/1372 mm
  • Effective legroom front/rear: 1062/861 mm

The new A-Class is the first Mercedes-Benz model to feature the completely new MBUX - Mercedes-Benz User Experience multimedia system, which also ushers in a new era for Mercedes me connectivity at the same time. As a result, it also comes standard in the A-Class Sedan. A unique feature of this system is its ability to learn thanks to artificial intelligence. MBUX is customisable and adapts to the user. It thus creates an emotional connection between vehicle, driver and passengers.

Its further strengths include, depending on the specification, the high-resolution Widescreen Cockpit with touchscreen operation of the media display, the navigation display with augmented reality technology plus intelligent voice control with natural speech recognition, which is activated with the keyword “Hey Mercedes”. A head-up display is also available. The touchscreen is part of the comprehensive MBUX touch-control concept – a triad consisting of the touchscreen, touchpad on the centre console (optional) and touch control buttons on the steering wheel.

The new A-Class comes with expanded Active Brake Assist as standard. Depending on the situation, it can effectively help to mitigate the consequences of rear-end collisions with slower-moving, stopping or stationary vehicles ahead, and even with crossing pedestrians and cyclists, or prevent them altogether.

There is a choice of suspension systems for the A-Class, depending on engine variant and driver preference. The line-up of wheels ranges from 16 to 19 inches.

The front axle of the new A‑Class features a McPherson design. The more powerful versions and models with 4MATIC, adaptive damping or larger wheels are fitted with a complex four-link rear axle. The other models have a weight-optimised torsion-beam rear axle.

Prices for A-Class Saloon revealed

Prices start from £27,875 for the A 180 d Sport, and £28,095 for the A 200 Sport.

The 180 d uses a 1.5-litre diesel engine, which produces 116PS and 260 Nm of torque. It delivers up to 68.9 mpg on the combined cycle, and emits 110 g/km of CO2. It has a top speed of 125 mph, and can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 10.5 seconds.

The A 200 is powered by a 1.3-litre petrol engine with an output of 163PS and 250Nm. It can deliver up to 51.4 mpg and emits 121 g/km of CO 2 . A 7G-DCT automatic transmission is available as standard across all models.

There are a number of option packages available. The Executive equipment package costs £1395 and upgrades the standard seven-inch central touchscreen media display to a 10.25-inch item, as well as adding Active Parking Assist with Parktronic, heated front seats and Mirror package.

For £2395, customers can specify the Premium equipment line which, in addition to the Executive line, adds a 10.25-inch cockpit display – creating a widescreen effect, 64-colour ambient lighting, illuminated door sills, Keyless-Go, upgraded sound system and a rear armrest.

The Premium Plus equipment line includes the Premium and Executive lines and adds electrically-operated seats with memory function for the driver and front passenger, multibeam LED head lights with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and a panoramic sunroof. Premium Plus is available for £3,595.

The Advanced Navigation package introduces augmented reality into the onboard satellite navigation. Using a camera located at the top of the windscreen, the infotainment screen overlays the navigation display with the actual road ahead, making for clearer, more obvious navigation. The package includes Traffic Sign Assist which automatically reads road signs, making sure the driver is always aware of the current speed limit. The Advanced Navigation package costs £495 and is only available in conjunction with the Executive, Premium or Premium Plus equipment lines.

Mercedes-AMG A35 Saloon revealed

Closely related to the Mercedes-AMG A35 hatch, the Saloon shares a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 306PS. It takes 4.8 seconds to hit 62mph (0.1 of a second slower than the hatchback) and goes on to a limited top speed of 155mph.

As standard, the A35 Saloon comes with 18-inch alloy wheels (19-inch wheels are optional), while a spoiler lip on the boot lid along with two round tailpipe trims and a new diffuser mark it out as an AMG. There's a fresh radiator grille at the front, along with an AMG Line front apron, a front splitter and silver chrome trim elements.

Mercedes-AMG claims a best in segment for the A35 Saloon's rear headroom (944mm), while the boot holds 420 litres of luggage. A large boot opening allows easy access.

Expected to go on sale later in 2019, the Mercedes-AMG A35 Saloon will have a premium over the £34,350 hatchback.
