Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe (2015 – 2019) Verdict
Find out more about the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe (2015 – 2019)
If you want a big SUV but without the boxy looks, there has been little to choose from aside from the BMW X6. That is until now. Mercedes-Benz has finally followed suit with the GLE Coupe, a car it says combines the sporty nature of a coupe with the characteristics of an SUV. If that's what you're after, will the GLE Coupe float your acorns?
With its swoopy profile and rear-end styling borrowed from the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe, the GLE certainly stands out. This is no shy and retiring wallflower. Instead it's a bold and aggressive SUV with bulging wheelarches and huge 21-inch and larger alloy wheels.
As with the X6, it's not a car that's likely to be universally popular. Don't expect to be let out of many junctions into traffic. That said, it does stand out, so if you want to make a statement - this is the car for you.
While the outside is all new, under the metal the GLE Coupe is actually based on the Mercedes-Benz ML - which itself was revised and renamed the Mercedes GLE. The old ML was hardly renowned for its handling prowess but Mercedes-Benz has clearly made significant changes as the GLE Coupe is a big improvement.
That said, it never feels particularly agile. This is a big car at close to five metres long and although it handles well in corners, you're always aware of its sheer bulk. Performance is strong though and the mainstay of the GLE Coupe is the 350d which has huge reserves of torque with 620Nm on tap.
The interior is impressive with the premium feel we've come to expect from a modern Mercedes-Benz. The sloping roofline does mean rear headroom is a bit compromised but only taller passengers will really notice.
So, should you buy one? Well, that very much depends on your view on coupe-styled SUVs. If you’re in the market for an alternative to the BMW X6, then the GLE Coupe will fulfil your mandate with aggressive flair and grace. However, with prices starting at £60,000, the swoopy Mercedes-Benz flies perilously close to Range Rover Sport territory and we'd struggle to look beyond the Range Rover for all-round ability and style.

Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe (2015 – 2019) handling and engines
- Engines range from GLE 350 d to GLE 63 AMG
- Readers report Real MPG to be between 13–32 mpg
The GLE Coupe makes most sense with the 350d diesel engine. Despite the name it actually uses a 3.0-litre V6 engine, albeit it turbocharged to provide 258PS. It may be the 'entry-level' model in the range but it offers more than enough performance, helped in no small part by the mammoth 620Nm of torque which is available from low revs, just 1600rpm.
This means it pulls like a train and you'll never be left wanting for pace. It's not quite as quick as the 35d engine in the BMW X6, the GLE Coupe taking 7.0 seconds to get from 0-62mph compared to 6.7 seconds for the X6, but in everyday driving it feels just as potent.
Economy is reasonable with a claimed 39.2mpg - we'd expect to see around 30mpg in real world driving - while emissions of 187g/km put it in VED band J.
The GLE Coupe benefits from the excellent Mercedes-Benz nine-speed automatic. It may seem overly complex to have so many ratios, but the 9G-TRONIC gearbox delivers seamless shifts and kicks down quickly to make overtaking effortless. Add in 4Matic four-wheel drive and traction is impressive given all the torque available, even in the wet.
Given that the GLE Coupe is based on the old ML, you'd be forgiven for having concerns over the handling. But the GLE has had a complete overhaul including - crucially - a new steering system. As a result, it's a completely different animal and far more confidence-inspiring in corners.
The steering is nicely weighted and responsive for a big car, yet the GLE Coupe rarely feels nimble. It's an SUV that's great for covering big motorway miles, but is far from ideal for negotiating down country lanes. It does actually corner very well, but you never forget that this is a car that's two metres wide and weighs 2.2 tonnes.
The upside is that it does ride particularly well, even when fitted with the 21-inch standard alloys. That's down to the self-levelling air suspension and active damping which comes as standard. It means the GLE Coupe is quiet over bumps and deals well with poorly surfaced roads.
Aside from the diesel, there's also a 450 AMG model, powered by a 3.0-litre V6 petrol with 367PS while the outright performance model is the mammoth AMG 63 S which has a 5.5-litre V8 engine producing 585PS and giving the big GLE Coupe a 0-62mph time of just 4.2 seconds.

Despite its coupe-esque profile, the GLE Coupe is still an SUV with a spacious cabin that has enough room for five adults. The rear is slightly compromised by the sloping roof, but that's only really an issue for passengers over six-foot.
The high-quality interior has a solid feel to it and is dominated by a high-mounted eight-inch colour screen that's controlled via a hefty metal-rimmed dial on the centre console. The infotainment system isn't the most modern-looking but it's fairly intuitive and the navigation is quick to route.
One some of the rather dated stereo buttons and and air conditioning controls let the GLE Coupe down and are at odds with the rest of the modern interior. However, the driving position is excellent with lots of adjustment in the steering column and seat, so you'll get comfortable whatever your size.
The 650-litre boot is only around 40 litres less than a standard GLE and the rear seats fold down to create a big load area. That said the standard boot is deep enough for everyday use, although the sheer height of the GLE Coupe means it can be hard to lift heavy things - like pushchairs - up into it.
Navigation, leather seats with electronic controls, dual zone climate control and a powered tailgate are all standard, along with rear privacy glass and ambient lighting. The GLE Coupe also gets plenty of safety kit, which includes crosswind assist to help maintain the car's balance in high winds.

Mercedes-Benz unveils the GLE Coupe
Thee AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine in the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe is rated at 585PS and will be the only version available in the UK.
The high-performance SUV comes with the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with active roll stabilisation ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM and the Sports Direct-Steer system. The 4MATIC all-wheel drive with rear-biased power distribution and the DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes promise to deliver what distinguishes every AMG vehicle: driving performance.
In terms of drive system, the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine develops 585PS and 760Nm in the S-Model which is the only version that will be available in the UK. It boasts the higher output and torque courtesy of a higher maximum charge pressure.
The GLE 63 Coupe accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 4.2 seconds (S-Model), returns 23.7 mpg (NEDC (combined) and emits CO2 279 g/km as well as compling with the EU6 standards.
Depending on the mode selected for the variable dynamic handling control system DYNAMIC SELECT, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC offers an impressively high shift speed and perfect transitions for a sportier driving style as well as smooth, barely perceptible gear changes for enjoyable cruising.
The M button allows the driver to emphasise the sporty character and to shift gear exclusively using the steering-wheel shift paddles. The seven-speed automatic transmission now shifts independently neither on kick-down nor upon reaching the maximum engine speed limit.
Roll stabilisation, damping and suspension adapt automatically to the prevailing driving situation, offering both optimum ride comfort and maximum stability. The damping system changes its area of emphasis depending on the preselected DYNAMIC SELECT mode. “Sport Plus” mode puts the emphasis on maximum possible transverse dynamics. Conversely, “Comfort” mode enables maximum ride comfort.
The fully load-bearing air suspension system is speed-sensitive, lowering the body at higher speeds in order to minimise drag while increasing driving stability. The current operating conditions are detected via the steering angle sensor, four level sensors, three body sensors, the driving speed as well as the positions of the brake pedal and accelerator. The control unit uses these signals for infinitely variable adjustment of the current damping force required for each individual wheel.
The instrument panel on the GLE 63 Coupé is in black ARTICO man-made leather. The partially integrated central display visualises the individual DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes with animated graphics. The centre console accommodates the COMAND controller with optimally ergonomically positioned touchpad; on the right is the DYNAMIC SELECT rotary actuator for the various transmission modes. Located above is the M button for the manual transmission mode.
The higher-powered Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupé also offers genuine added benefits in the interior. For even more intense contact with the vehicle, the grip area of the Performance steering wheel is in DINAMICA microfibre. A sporty look also dominates the driver's field of vision: the instrument cluster has an even higher-class look with fine red scale graduations around the speedometer and rev counter and a grey decorative band. The passengers are accommodated on high-grade exclusive nappa leather upholstery. AMG medallions in the head restraints lend the interior a special, luxurious note. Set against black interior appointments, the grey seat belts and
