Top 10: Most economical new cars to buy in 2016

Whether because of an increasing sense of environmental responsibility or because of tax incentives, low-emission vehicles are becoming ever more popular. Not only are they cheaper to tax, but they’re better when it comes to fuel economy too.

Our list omits pure electric cars – you’ll find those in a separate top 10. We have included plug-ins, though there is a bridge between electric cars and plugins so some appear in the EV list too. The list is in no particular order and includes vehicles of all sizes.
