That’s a noteworthy £500 saving over a base-level and mechanically identical Toyota Yaris, although the Toyota does get 16-inch alloy wheels as standard. The Mazda 2 Hybrid Pure, meanwhile, makes do with 15-inch steel wheels.

Specifications are largely identical elsewhere. Like the Toyota, the Mazda 2 Hybrid Pure gets an infotainment screen (with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) and autonomous driving aids – that can more or less drive the car for you on the motorway – fitted as standard. You also get auto lights and wipers, and climate control.

Starting from £21,150, Agile trim is the next step in the Mazda’s line-up. Agile models get an eight-inch infotainment screen connected to six rather than four speakers. You also get keyless entry and start, a reversing camera and the all-important alloy wheels, although they’re still only 15 inches in diameter.

You can top up that kit by specifying the £980 Comfort Pack on Agile models. It adds sportier bumpers and gloss-black wing mirrors, plus you get LED exterior lighting, a digital dashboard display, dual-zone climate control and sports seats.

From £23,610, Select models sit at the top of the range. They get all the kit of an Agile model with the Comfort Pack and add 16-inch alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, ambient interior lighting, tinted windows, wireless phone charging and a blind-spot monitoring system.

The Mazda 2 Hybrid will sell in parallel with the standard Mazda 2 that starts from £16,575 for an SE-L model with a 75PS petrol engine. By contrast, all versions of the Hybrid get a 1.5-litre petrol boosted by an electric motor to produce 116PS and return fuel economy of up to 74.3mpg.
