MG 4 electric hatchback: price, specs, release date
- MG 4 electric hatchback teased
- Volkswagen ID.3 rival will have a 200mile range
- Reveal later this year, near-£25,000 starting price expected
MG has teased the MG 4 electric hatchback in a video released by the company ahead of the car's reveal later this year. The MG 4 will compete with electric family cars like the Volkswagen ID.3, Renault Megane E-Tech EV and the Nissan Leaf.
MG 4 electric hatchback price and release date
You can expect the MG 4 electric to focus on offering excellent value in an attempt to knock more established car brands' EVs off their pedestal, which means the MG 4 could be priced from £25,000 once you've factored in the Government's £1500 zero-emissions car grant. That would make it extremely competitive when compared to the Volkswagen ID.3, which starts from £35,835 and the Nissan Leaf (£26,995).
MG 4 electric hatchback exterior and interior design
While the MG 4 electric hatchback has yet to be fully revealed, you can learn a surprisingly large amount from the teaser video found on the company's website.
Such as? Well, you can expect it to have a striking design. The video shows the new MG hidden under a silk sheet fluttering in the breeze to reveal the outline of a shapely front end, a sporty front bumper, side skirts, 17-inch wheels, confident body creases and an LED light bar that stretches across the boot lit.
The car is also likely to have common EV touches like a bluff nose and a roof spoiler – both of which will creep up its range between charges.
Inside, the MG 4 is sure to follow the direction set by the new MG 5's cabin (pictured) which has a pair of large infotainment screens, a tall transmission tunnel – complete with a drive selector – and a completely flat floor that'll make the car feel roomy inside. It'll have enough space for four tall adults and the boot should swallow a couple of large suitcases.
MG 4 electric hatchback charging, range and performance
The MG 4 electric hatchback is likely to get the same EV powertrain as the shart-range version of the new MG 5. It has a 177PS motor that produces 280Nm of torque and gets its juice from a 50.3kWh battery.
It's a combination that would give the new MG 4 acceleration of 0-62mph in around 8.3 seconds and a top speed of about 115mph.
You can expect that to feel significantly quicker than those figures suggest thanks to a surge of torque that's available instantaneously. A single gear means the car will drive like an automatic, while regenerative brakes – that engage when you take your foot off the accelerator – mean you can drive the car using one pedal, only needing to press on the brakes in emergencies.
The car would likely have a range of around 200 miles between charges under the tough WLTP testing regime and it'll take about 40 minutes to recharge the battery from 5-80 per cent using a DC charger.
How much will the MG 4 electric hatchback cost?
You can expect the MG 4 EV hatchback to be priced from £25,000 when it goes on sale towards the end of 2022.
What will the new MG EV hatchback be called?
The new MG EV hatchback is expected to be called the MG 4 because the name MG 4 appears on the company's UK website – slotting neatly between the MG 3 hatchback and MG 5 EV estate.
How big is the MG 4 electric hatchback?
MG has revealed the new MG 4 will be 4300mm (other measurements aren't released), meaning it'll be close in size to electric models like the Volkswagen ID.3 (4261mm) and Nissan Leaf (4490mm).
