Toyota GR86: price, specs and release date
- Toyota GR86 revealed
- 240PS, 0-62mph in 6.3 seconds
- Priced from £30,000, expected on sale mid-2022
The Toyota GR86 will give you an alternative to models such as the BMW 2 Series coupe and Mazda MX-5 sports car when it goes on sale with an expected starting price of £30,000. It's set to improve where the GT86 – the car GR86 replaces – left off by giving you more power (231PS up from 200PS), tighter handling and a posher interior that'll be easier to live with every day.
Toyota GR86 price and release date
While the Toyota GR86 is already on sale in the US it's not expected to land on UK shores until later this year carrying a price tag of around £30,000. Expect standard equipment levels to be high and include kit such as active cruise control, keyless entry, a large infotainment screen and sports seats.
Toyota GR 86 styling and interior
The Toyota GR86 keeps the classic sports car lines of the old GT 86, meaning you get a long bonnet and a squat rear end with twin tailpipes. That said, it looks chunkier than the old model a hint that its body is 50 per cent stiffer for more precise handling in corners. A subtle body kit finishes off the look and you can expect the GR86 to have a long list of aftermarket options, allowing it to appeal to the track day and enthusiast drivers that the car is aimed at.
That said, you can expect the interior to feel significantly more substantial than the tinny old model. Inside, you'll find soft-touch plastics as well as a large and colourful centre infotainment screen that will help the Toyota appeal to buyers who may have originally been considering a posh German alternative.
Practicality exists of sorts. So, the front seats will have plenty of room for tall passengers but legroom in the back is almost non-existent. On the flip side, the boot is large and with the rear seats folded away, you can expect the GR86 to have room for four spare wheels (another attempt to appeal to track day pilgrims).
Toyota GR86 engine, performance and drive
One criticism aimed at the old GT86 – which got from 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds – was that it was too slow, something the new Toyota GR86 looks to address.
With 231PS from a 2.4-litre engine (up from 2.0 litres in the old model), it does the benchmark sprint in 6.3 seconds while its increased torque of 250Nm comes in at just 3700rpm, meaning the car will feel significantly more flexible than the GT86 which could only muster 205Nm at a screaming 6400rpm.
You can expect the GR 86 to serve up plenty of smiles in the bends. A limited-slip differential comes as standard making the Toyota safe and predictable to slide in corners in combination with the model's famously spindly tyres, which focus on serving up adjustability rather than outright grip.
The flat-four engine, meanwhile, gives the Toyota an extremely low centre of gravity and you can expect it to come sporting a six-speed manual gearbox with a slick and precise shift action. Other neat touches include a light-weight aluminium bonnet and roof.
