2023 Volkswagen ID.Vizzion: price and release date
Volkswagen has yet to name its new electric saloon, however it's likely be called either the ID.7, 8 or 9 – all have been trademarked by VW. It's expected to be priced from around £45,000 and will go on sale in 2023 with the first deliveries prioritised for China.
2023 Volkswagen ID.Vizzion: styling and interior
You can expect Volkswagen's new electric saloon to look surprisingly similar to the Volkswagen ID.Vizzion concept car. Upfront, you'll get a sealed-off grille that's bookended by matrix LED headlights and a low-set bonnet that'll give you a great view out of the front of the car.
Around the sides, the Volkswagen's coupe-style roof is great for aerodynamics and sharp creases above the front and rear wheels add a hint of definition. Although the rear suicide doors of the concept car – which hinge from the back and give you great cabin access because there's no need for a B pillar – are unlikely to make it through to production.
The back of the car, meanwhile, finishes the light show started at the front with a red LED light bar that stretches the breadth of the boot lid. Its cool glow will make the new electric saloon easy to spot at night.
Don't like the saloon-style body? Then we have good news, Volkswagen is also expected to offer the car as an estate, which it previewed with the Space Vizzion concept car.
If the Vizzion's exterior looks relatively conventional, expect the interior to feel quite different to anything you have experienced in petrol or diesel-powered VW saloon.
Large screens behind the steering wheel and on the centre of the dash will cut down on the need for conventional buttons, leaving a minimal interior design that'll feel very modern, while the ID. Vizzion's EV underpinnings mean the cabin has a flat floor with no transmission tunnel and a centre console that floats above the floor. Unlike the concept, which doesn't have a steering wheel or pedals – to hint at its autonomous driving ability – you can expect the finished car to have conventional controls.
Augmented reality will be the order of the day with a sat-nav that makes it look like its directions are hovering over an image of the road ahead on the car's infotainment screen and a parking camera that can beam an image of the car onto its surroundings to aid parking.
In terms of space, expect the ID.Vizzion to comfortably accommodate four adults and to have a boot that's around 550 litres in capacity.
2023 Volkswagen ID.Vizzion: motor, battery, range, charging times
Like most other electric cars, you'll likely be able to buy the production version of the Volkswagen ID. Vizzion in two distinct flavours – a long-range model and a performance variant.
The long-range car will be rear-wheel drive only and produce 204PS from a single electric motor mounted to the rear wheels. That'll be enough for 0-62mph in around eight seconds, although it'll feel a lot quicker than that thanks to the car's instant power and a single gear.
You can expect a Vizzion in this configuration to get around 430 miles from a single charge of its 84kWh battery. You'll be able to add around 240 miles worth of charge in 30 minutes using a public fast charger.
The Performance model, meanwhile, will carry the GTX badge and will likely be four-wheel drive – with a motor at the front and the back – for 299PS combined and acceleration of 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds.
