The new Peugeot e-208 is being updated for 2023 with a larger battery, more powerful electric motor and longer EV driving range. The updates – which have been donated by the new Peugeot e-308 – aim to keep the top-selling car competitive alongside supermini rivals such as the Vauxhall e-Corsa, Renault Zoe and MINI Electric.
Those looking to buy or lease a new Peugeot e-208 should be able to place their order once it is released later this year, to make sure they receive one of the first cars in the UK in 2023.
2023 Peugeot e-208 prices and release date
The updated new Peugeot e-208 will arrive in showrooms from 2023, with prices expected to be similar to the current electric Peugeot which starts from just over £30,000.
The new Peugeot e-208 will follow the trim structure of the current model, which opens with entry-level Active Premium + and moves up through Allure Premium +, GT and GT Premium. The Peugeot e-208 GT models are high-spec alternatives to premium EVs such as the BMW i3.
2023 Peugeot e-208 styling, interior and technology
The pretty Peugeot e-208 remains a crisp and fresh-looking car, so Peugeot is not altering the exterior styling. This will help protect retained values of used Peugeot e-208 already on British roads, you can buy a 2020 car these days from around £24,000.
The 2023 Peugeot e-208 has a distinctive body-colour chequer-pattern front grille, which is set off by bold LED daytime running lights that run either side of the bumper. High-efficiency, low rolling resistance ‘A+’ tyres run on 16-inch alloys, and the new Peugeot e-208 carries blue ‘e’ logos on both the C-pillars and tailgate.
Inside, the popular Peugeot i-Cockpit layout remains. This comprises a super-small steering wheel and widescreen full-colour digital instrument display, which is viewed from above the steering wheel. Peugeot calls it head-up-style, and it’s complemented by a central touchscreen that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Peugeot e-208 doesn’t have conventional heater controls, but quick-access shortcut ‘piano key’ buttons allow easy access to the controls, plus other important menus. The layout gives the e-208 a fittingly sophisticated look – and you can even get a 3D option for the driver’s display, which is very eye-catching.
Instead of a gearlever, the Peugeot e-208 has a drive toggle on the centre console, and there’s also a button to dial up one of three modes – eco, normal or sport. They give different peak power outputs and responses, and allow the driver to manage the car’s range. They also display different colours and graphics in the instrument display.
The Peugeot e-208 is compatible with the MyPeugeot smartphone app. This allows owners to remotely communicate with their car, so they can check range and charging status, schedule a remote charge and even remotely turn on the climate control to heat or cool the car before they drive away.
Meanwhile, the Peugeot Free2Move eSolutions smartphone app allows electric Peugeot e-208 drivers to plan their journeys around charging stations available on their chosen route.
2023 Peugeot e-208 engines, performance and fuel economy
The new 2023 Peugeot e-208 is fitted with the drivetrain from the recently-launched new Peugeot e-308. This boosts power by 15%, from 136PS to 156PS, which should further cut the already-sprightly 0-62mph acceleration time of 8.1 seconds.
The silent-running electric motor is seamless, and the two-pedal automatic gearbox means it’s easy to drive around town. It’s combined with a heat pump that ensures the climate control operates as efficiency as possible, further aiding driving range.
Peugeot says the heat pump is particularly effective when temperatures are low: it boosts the range by almost 25 miles when driving in town at temperatures close to 0 degrees C.
The new Peugeot e-208 has a larger 51kWh battery, which uses a more efficient high-voltage design. The result is a 10% improvement in overall driving range, from 225 miles to an impressive 248 miles – that’s a healthy extra 23 miles per charge.
With the optional 11kW fast charger, Peugeot says that those who buy or lease a new e-208 will be able to charge from a 100kW public rapid charger from 20% to 80% capacity in just 25 minutes.
An improvement in overall efficiency means the Peugeot e-208 now consumes just 12kWh of electricity per 62 miles. Those who have bought or leased a current Peugeot e-208 will quickly notice the improvements in the new 2023 model.
What’s more, since the Peugeot e-208 was launched back in 2019, Peugeot has improved driving range by almost 18%, and reduced energy consumption by 15%. If you already run a Peugeot e-208, the boost in range and efficiency give a strong reason for you to buy or lease the new 2023 model.
