2023 MG5 EV: Prices, specs and release date

  • New MG5 EV brings fresh style to the UK’s only electric family estate car
  • Prices start from £30,995 with enhanced interior technology and extra features for both SE and Trophy models
  • MG's 61kWh battery gives a range of up to 250 miles

The new MG5 EV – the only family-sized electric estate car on sale in the UK – has been refreshed for 2023. The capable five-seater is already the fifth best-selling EV in Britain. MG now aims to build on this success.

Because the new MG5 EV doesn’t have any direct rivals – at least until the Peugeot e-308 and Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer Electric are launched – the fast-growing Chinese brand lists the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports, a hybrid, as its chief rival. The Nissan Leaf is also mentioned as an alternative, although this is a smaller hatchback, not an estate car.

The new MG5 EV estate joins the recently-launched new MG4 EV hatchback to further enhance the appeal of MG’s affordable electric car range.

2023 MG5 EV prices and release date

New MG5 EV prices open at £30,995 for the SE variant, and £33,495 for the Trophy model. There are just two variants, all using the same battery and electric motor. This keeps the range nice and simple.

The new MG5 EV is on sale now. Deliveries are expected in the UK before the end of 2022, and the model will be released to dealers in earnest during early 2023.

2023 MG5 EV styling, interior and technology

The new MG5 EV now has much more assertive front-end styling. Its slim LED headlights look high-tech, and its daytime running light signature is distinctive. There’s a closed-off, gloss black grille (far slimmer than the old-fashioned chrome grille of the current car), a neat MG logo on the bonnet and, below, an almost F1-inspired lower bumper design. It’s truly eye-catching and certainly distinct from the current MG5 EV.

The lower side mouldings add muscularity to the profile of the new MG5 EV. There are brushed aluminium roof rails, metal window surrounds and, on the MG5 EV Trophy, dark-tinted rear glass to add some modernity. The 17-inch wheels on the Trophy version look more sophisticated as well.

The new LED rear lights are distinctly eye-catching, and have a simple metal strip connecting them, giving the new MG5 EV a broader and more up-to-date appearance. The rear bumper is much simpler and cleaner as well, again in line with modern trends.

Inside, the new MG5 EV has been fully overhauled. It has a new 10.25-inch widescreen central infotainment screen, which runs upgraded software that is more comprehensive and feature-packed. The screen looks stylish and is complemented by more modern finishes for the rest of the dashboard. There’s a 7.0-inch driver display, and both models in the range feature a six-speaker stereo with 3D sound as standard.

The new MG5 EV has MG iSmart connected car features, which include an MG smartphone app. This lets you monitor the stage of the battery charge remotely. There are standard safety-assist features, including adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, intelligent speed limit assist, and autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and bicycle detection.

The higher-spec MG5 EV Trophy has some useful extras that will tempt those looking to buy or lease the new electric MG. These include climate control air-con, heated front seats, electric folding door mirrors and an auto-dimming rear view mirror. It also boasts leather-style perforated upholstery, as an upgrade to the fabric upholstery in the new MG5 EV SE. In terms of estate car practicality, the new MG5 EV has an impressive 479-litre boot with the seats up, which expands to 1,367 litres if you fold them down.

2023 MG5 EV engines, performance and fuel economy

The new MG5 EV boasts a 156PS electric motor in both SE and Trophy guises. This gives 0-62mph performance in just 7.7 seconds – swift for a family-friendly estate car – plus a top speed of 115mph. The new MG5 EV is front-wheel drive and weighs just over two tonnes.

The car uses a 61.1kWh battery, which gives a range of 250 miles in entry-level SE guise. This is aided by smaller 16-inch alloy wheels, which feature wind-cheating aerodynamic fins. On larger wheels, the MG5 EV Trophy has a 235-mile range.

Both the MG5 EV models can use 150kW DC rapid chargers, which will take them from 10 to 80 percent charge in just 35 minutes. Using a 7kW home wall box, it takes 10 hours to charge them from 10 to 100 percent – ideal for plugging in overnight and starting the next day with a full battery.

Using a commonplace 50kW public rapid charger, the new MG5 EV will top up from 10 to 80 percent in just over an hour. It uses the combined Type 2 and CCS charge standard, with the charging socket mounted centrally, just below the front grille.

The MG5 EV also has a cool Jaguar-style rotary gear selector and both models come with a reversing camera – which is enhanced in MG5 EV Trophy spec by a 360-degree parking camera.

How big is the new MG5 EV?

The new MG5 EV measures 4,600mm long, 1,818mm wide and 1,543mm high – the latter figure includes the roof rails fitted as standard to both models.

How long does it take to charge a new MG5 EV?

If you charge the new MG5 EV from 10 to 100 per cent using a 7kW wall box, the process will take 10 hours. Using a 50kW fast charger, commonly found at motorway service stations, it will take 61 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 percent.

What are the key extras you get when buying or leasing an MG5 EV Trophy?

Both new MG5 EV versions are well equipped, but the Trophy adds leather-style upholstery, heated front seats, electric folding door mirrors and 17-inch alloy wheels.
