The new Vauxhall Astra Electric adds a fresh twist to the British brand’s eye-catching family car line-up. Arriving in the UK in 2023, it will be offered as both a hatchback and new Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer Electric estate – the latter being one of the few new EV estates available to buy or lease.

The new Vauxhall Astra Electric will prove a stern challenge to the well-received Renault Megane E-Tech Electric, along with the Volkswagen ID.3, Cupra Born, bargain-priced MG4 EV, novel GWM Ora Funky Cat and long-running Nissan Leaf. The new Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer Electric estate will rival the updated MG5 EV estate.

2023 Vauxhall Astra Electric prices and release date

Vauxhall Astra Electric prices are expected to start from around £37,000. This pitches it alongside its key rivals: the Renault Megane E-Tech Electric, Cupra Born and Volkswagen ID.3. There will also be a new electric Peugeot e-308 arriving in 2023; this is likely to cost slightly more than the Vauxhall Astra Electric.

Ordering for the new Vauxhall Astra Electric hatch will open in early 2023. Deliveries are expected to commence in June 2023. Orders for the new Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer Electric open in summer 2023, with deliveries due to start before the end of the year.

2022 Vauxhall Astra Electric styling, interior and technology

The Vauxhall Astra Electric sticks with the same ‘bold and pure’ design style that’s been so well-received with other versions of the car. It’s very modern and eye-catching, helped by some bright metallic paint finishes – and contrasting black roof colours.

The ‘Vauxhall Compass’ design principle sees a single central line run from front to rear. This gives the Astra a distinctive bonnet crease, which is mimicked at the rear with a unique vertical high-level brake light.

The design emphasis is very much on creating a clean look for the new Vauxhall Astra Electric. The front ‘Vauxhall vizor’ black panel sees all the sensors and radars hidden behind a gloss black grille, into which the LED headlights blend. LED tail lamps sit flush with the bootlid on both new Vauxhall Astra Electric hatch and Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer Electric estate versions.

The new Vauxhall Astra Electric boasts 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels as standard. A distinctive black finish is available as an optional extra for added visual appeal. Ultra-bright ‘class-leading’ IntelliLux Pixel Light headlamps are also available – they feature 168 individual LED elements.

Inside, the new Vauxhall Astra Electric has a modern, digital-first feel to its interior. It uses the Vauxhall Pure Panel dashboard layout, which comprises a 10.0-inch driver display and a central 10.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity are both included as standard.

In the new Vauxhall Astra Electric, the media system offers a series of displays to help monitor battery status and range. The built-in sat nav system can also hunt out nearby electric car chargers, and help choose the most efficient routes.

The new Vauxhall Astra Electric sticks with physical buttons for the climate control air-con and other functions – and there’s a rotary knob to adjust the audio volume. But those wanting to step into the future can choose to control their new Astra Electric via the ‘Hey Vauxhall’ natural voice recognition assistant.

Seating comfort is a highlight of the new Vauxhall Astra Electric. The new Active Sports seat, which can be finished in tactile Alcantara, is approved by the ‘campaign for healthy backs’ AGR organisation. Vauxhall says they are hip-hugging, and available with both manual and electric adjustment.

Because the new Vauxhall Astra Electric’s batteries are mounted below the floor, interior space is identical to petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid Astras. Boot space is the same as the Astra Hybrid-e plug-in hybrid, too.

The new Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer Electric estate has 516 litres of boot space with the seats up, expanding to an impressive 1,553 litres with them folded.

2022 Vauxhall Astra Electric performance and fuel economy

The new Vauxhall Astra Electric is powered by a 156PS electric motor. Performance figures have not yet been revealed, but the British firm says it will achieve a top speed of 105mph.

If you're more concerned about range than speed, the new Vauxhall Astra Electric’s 54kWh battery will serve up an official, WLTP-approved EV range of 258 miles on a single charge. It’s ready to use 100kW DC rapid charging, which will deliver an 80 percent charge in just 30 minutes.

The new Vauxhall Astra Electric also comes as standard from launch with a three-phase 11kW AC onboard charger, which will mean faster charging for those using a suitably powerful home wallbox.

The new Vauxhall Astra Electric’s automatic gearbox is controlled by a neat toggle on the wide, gloss black centre console. It also offers a choice of three driving modes – pick from Eco, Normal or Sport.

How efficient is the new Vauxhall Astra Electric?

The new Vauxhall Astra Electric will use 12.7kWh of electricity to travel 62 miles (100km). The carmaker says this is a low rate of electric consumption for a roomy five-door hatchback.
