Micra value

My elderly father has recently given up motoring and I needed to get advice on what his car was worth. It was a "53" Micra which had only done 12k, but had quite a bit of superficial body damage which made it quite difficult to value. I thought our local Nissan agents, Glynn Hopkins at Buckhurst Hill, would be able to help so I took in some photos of the car. I realise I was tapping them for a favour, but in my experience of car dealers they are normally happy to help with a query such as this which would take a couple of mins. I explained my father was envisaging a private sale, possibly to a relative or friend. The salesman I spoke to valued the car at £995 which struck me as remarkably low. A check on the What Car? website valued the car at around £2700 (albeit that would not take into account the body damage) and before I'd managed to discuss the valuation of the car with my father he had agreed to sell it to a friend for £2k, i.e. TWICE Glynn Hopkins valuation. If we had taken their advice, we would have been seriously out of pocket. I have complained to Glynn Hopkins, but despite sending a chase-up e-mail they have not responded. I think I have been badly let down. Have you any thoughts, please?

You can't complain about free advice. The valuation was based on what the car would have been worth to them, not what you may have got for it on the open market. A car is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it.
