What's the best car for a 100 mile daily commute?

I commute from Leamington Spa to Oxford each day. This is a mix of motorway (M40) and Oxford stop start traffic. I have been driving an Octavia 1.6 diesel. Would I be better to get a hybrid?

That's 48 miles, so roughly 100 miles a day and 500 miles a week. A self-charging hybrid probably makes more sense than a diesel, offering about the same economy overall, but not facing any forthcoming ban from sensitive town centres (such as Oxford).

I do a daily commute of approx 40 miles each way. I can charge a hybrid vehicle at work. What should I buy?
