Am I likely to have battery problems with a self-charging hybrid if I only do short journeys? Are hybrids the way to go in replacing a car that you intend to keep for a while?

A PHEV might make more sense if you cover lots of short journeys and can charge at home. That way, you'll be able to run under electric power most of the time. If not, a self-charging hybrid sounds like an excellent choice. We receive very few reports of issues with hybrid Toyota models.
