Marshall aid programme

When I first announced my intention to write ‘50 Years of Motorsport Marshalling’, you were kind enough to give it a plug and, indeed, I received a few letters from marshals from the early days who had since stopped marshalling but read your note. Well, the book eventually made it into print, after a two-and-a-half year gestation period. It was announced at the Retro Show (Historic Racing Car Show) in March. Whilst not exactly rushing off the shelves, it is selling steadily amongst marshals and their reviews have been flattering. I wonder if you might give it a mention again?

Obviously anyone who contributed to ’50 Years of Motorsport Marshalling’ by George Copeland would like to see their contribution in print. The book is an attempt to record the history of motorsport marshalling in the UK and the British Motorsport Marshals' Club (BMMC) in particular. The history was not well documented and it took two years of fairly intensive "digging" to extract enough information to form a reasonably accurate record. Prior to the formation of the British Motor Racing Marshals' Club in 1957 (which later became the BMMC) marshalling was a haphazard affair. Marshals might be recruited from members of the organising club of the day, drivers who were having a day off or from spectators. Few were experienced and there was no scheme for the recruitment of marshals and no formal training of any kind. The founding fathers of the Marshals' Club came up with the idea of a new club, solely for the better organisation and training of motor race marshals. It is tribute to their foresight that the British Motorsport Marshals' Club has become the largest organisation of its kind in the World. Most importantly, the Club is a collection of quite disparate characters. They come from all walks of life and give their time freely to the sport, in return for the enjoyment they get from doing so, their enthusiasm for the sport and the camaraderie that exists in marshalling ranks. They are a talented bunch and despite the voluntary nature of their duties are generally considered to be among the best in the world for the professionalism they bring to motor sport safety. All profits from the sale of this book will go to Marshals' Club funds.
