What should I do to ensure my insurance co offers a reasonable amount?

I had an accident last week and my car was written off. I'm v. worried as I only passed my test 11 months ago. I am a responsible driver (aged 35+), but my friend's car lost power on the M25 and I was following. What is the procedure to follow so that I ensure that I don't loose too much money from my insurance company?

No procedure. Nothing you can do except tell the truth. It's now in the hands of your insurer and the insurers of everyone else involved.
