Audi A1 Recommendation

Hi. We are looking at buying an Audi A1 Sportback. We normally drive less than 12,000 miles per year. We are therefore looking at one of the petrol options. However, we are unsure as to which one to choose between 1.2, 1.4 or the clever 1.4 which runs on 2 or 4 cylinders as and when required to save fuel. From reading through forums etc, people seem to report that the 1.2 petrol engine consumes oil excessively. The 1.4 petrol engine is a concern with regards to the reported piston failures on many similar variants within the VAG group. Which engine would you therefore recommend in the A1 sportback? We would like to keep the car long term if possible (5-7 years) and would like the car to be as proven as possible in terms of reliability. We originally wanted an auto, but having read comments about DSG issues, we would consider a manual instead if it prolonged the life of the car. Any thoughts?

The 1.4TSI 122 turbo only does not have a problem. It is the higher powered supercharged and turbocharged 1.4s that can have a fuelling problem that washes out the bores and leads to piston failure.
