Should I tell my insurance company that I hit a deer?

A friend of mine recently hit a deer, which caused minor damage to the car and none to the deer. Should all accidents, no matter how minor, be reported to the insurance company even if the cost is below the excess?

If no one else was involved apart from the deer and it will cost less than £500 to repair the car, then it makes no sense to report it to the insurer. They would put a claim against your record, regard you as an increased risk (whether they pay any money or not) and increase your premium for the next five years.
