I am buying a brand new Golf (Mark 7, 1.4 TDI SE DSG).
1. Should I take the pre-paid 3 year service package for near £400? At least one of the years is just an oil change.
2. Am I obliged to use a VW dealer for servicing to preserve the Warranty or can an independent do it using VW parts? (I have great confidence in our local garage over many years). If so, how do I ensure it would remain valid?
3. I won't be taking the Autoglym bodywork, glass, and upholstery protections but is there anything I can do myself to help keep the car looking good?

1. Unless this guarantees an oil and filter change at least every 12 months or every 10,000 miles whichever comes first, no. (It won't.)
2. Legally, no as long as the specialist uses only VAG approved parts and fluids and does the job to the exact VAG spec. But how do you prove that he did? So the practical answer is yes, you are forced to use a VAG dealer for servicing.
3. Buy a £45 tub of Autoglym High Definition wax and apply it twice a year. That way the tub should last 2 - 3 years.
