Issue with a 'lost' downpayment
I purchased a used car from a dealership. I made a down payment of £2000 and financed the rest, which i have made two payments on at this point. I got a call from the dealership and they cant find the money order. They then asked if I could use a receipt to stop the original payment, then make another.
I don't have the reciept, I was just out of hospital and was not up and about. I went to the store to check but without a reciept I'm at a loss - they have told me they're sending it to the police
Who is at fault - them or me?

You can't prove you made the downpayment. And they can't prove that you didn't. But the fact they admit they have "lost" the downpayment amounts to an admission that they received it, but lost it, so I don't think that's any different from them losing a £2,000 cash payment. In court, you may be required to show where the money came from that you used to buy the money order, and whoever sold you the money order may be required to show their records for that day which will reveal whether they issued a money order for £2,000 that day and to whom.
