19" 35 Profile Winter Tyres

I recently bought an ex-demo VW Scirocco R Line 150PS from a main dealer. I was led to believe that it could be fitted with winter tyres but now they tell me the 19inch wheels asre too big and I would need to buy a second set of smaller 17 inch alloys. These and the winter tyres themselves would cost a total of just over £3,000 which seems a bit OTT. Is it correct that 19 inch wheels are not suitable for winter tyres and is there a cheaper solution?
Thank you.

Michelin does offer cold weather tyres for 19" and 20" wheels, but not all widths and profiles. And, of course, the lower the profile of the tyre the less well it will actually work because it can't flex enough. On the Scirocco the 19" size is 235/35R19 and Michelin does do a Pilot Alpin 235/35 R19 91W XL.
