An economial estate car suitable for rough roads

Hi,

I do a lot of driving on rough, gravel roads as I spend a lot of time in South Africa, and am looking for an estate car that will survive them. I don't need 4 wheel drive and would prefer not to have an SUV. Fuel economy is important. If this was 20 or 30 years ago I'd buy a Peugeot 504 estate: is there a modern equivalent?

Thanks,
Adam

Actually a VW Golf Alltrack would probably do the job very well. The type of four wheel drive it is fitted with is an important advantage on rough gravel roads: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/volkswagen/volkswa.../ Or the similar SEAT Leon X-Pertience with 5mm more ground clearance: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/seat/seat-leon-x-p.../ Bigger, a VW Passat Alltrack (this is the old model): www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/volkswagen/vw-pass.../ And don't forget the Subaru Outback: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/subaru/subaru-outb.../
