How do I get my money back on a faulty second hand car?
I purchased a second hand Golf 1.4 FSI with 80,0022 miles on the clock for around £3000 in October. After driving it for around 600 miles it broke down. They have since diagnosed it as timing chain failure causing cylinder and valve damage with the cost of repair estimated between £1500 and £2000.
I don't feel I should foot the repair bill as the vehicle is evidently not of satisfactory quality (consumer rights 2015). I have a feeling they will claim "wear and tear" which I don't feel is reasonable as it's not my wear and tear. The dealership make a great effort on their website to assure the quality of their cars so if the timing belt was due to be changed, is it not a reasonable assumption that a car dealing professional would have this done before putting the car up for sale as a car of "satisfactory quality". Where do I stand legally if they try and wash their hands of responsibility?

The law assumes that any major problem with a car that occurs within 6 months of purchase was already developing on the date of purchase and is therefore the responsibility of the dealer. www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/ The dealer has no case. Has to fix the car or give you your money back. Better to get your money back.
