Best used family car for £5k?

My friend has about £5000 to spend on a used family car. She currently drives a new generation VW Beetle which she loves so she would prefer something not too 'boring' but it does need to be more practical as she has a four year old. She doesn't do big miles so I wouldn't have thought a diesel would be good. Any suggestions?

Something with side doors and relatively upright makes the most sense and is most likely to prevent a back injury. Suzuki Splash, Vauxhall Agila, KIA Venga, Hyundai ix20.
