Why have the MPG figures only been questioned for diesel engines? Are the figures for petrol engines correct?

You are making an entirely wrong assumption. It isn't diesel mpg that is currently being questioned; it's NOx emissions. MPG of both petrol and diesel cars has been questioned for years. The most reliable fuel economy figures for any recent car that has sold reasonably well can be found at: www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg
